Artist Statement
Carbonated aneurysm, product of one too many mind-shaking post-apocalyptic eye openers.
I'll choke, cough and hack up magnificent life-liquid splatters,
And I'm frantic, watching all the eyes dart from each beauty smear.
Catch the wind with one hand and peer into smug scoffs of 'where does he get off'.
Well, not to be rude, but I got off at my stop, where all dreams are fireproof, and each preacher's a madman.
I took insanity intravenously, and discovered glory where only pity's jaw dropped.
I found beauty in the heart of every grotesque soul.
And I’ll continue to drip, drop and splash my perspective on every page to which my pen wanders.
My work is an interpretation of the world around me. Using obscure visuals, and often twisted or strange figures, I explore the actions, emotions, and on-goings of people in my day to day life. This is especially apparent in my sketchbook, which is more a combination of sketchbook, journal, and scrapbook than a stand alone sketch collector. Not every discovery is recorded through images. Sometimes a journal entry is sufficient, or a poem, even scraps or found objects are collected in an attempt to recreate the situation. A combination of two or three of these elements is not unheard of either, especially mixing poetry and visual art. I seek out the inner motives of people, and capture that image, exposing beauty in the grotesque. Breaking away from conventional aesthetics is what I achieve. Although there is a great deal of hidden meaning and metaphor in my work, I prefer to leave interpretation up to the viewer. I would rather have someone discover something about their self and walk away with insight than spew meaning and have them not be able to relate. That being said, I love to correlate afterwards, and reflect with an admirer. Learning what they gained from a piece of mine is the greatest satisfaction.
Currently my focus is on exploring different media, and trying to find the best way(s) to express myself. Wax, wire and glass, amongst others, are media I have eagerly used to create pieces. I hope to further my exploration into a variety of other interesting and different ways to actualize my ambitions. Not all my pieces are experimental in medium though, many are done with watercolour, acrylics, pencil and ink. Often I find myself grabbing the nearest drawing utensil and just going, even coloured pencil crayon.
Most of all I want to grow. Every piece, I learn more about myself, more about the world. Art is how I understand things, how I make connections. I will continue to grow through my art, through my creations, through my perception. I will continue to grow.
